We are looking for freelance writers to contribute to Archtoolbox.

If you have technical expertise in the construction industry or detailed knowledge of architectural practice issues, have good research skills, and can write technical articles in simple language, please consider applying.

What We Look For

Demonstrated Expertise: You have been working in the construction industry for at least five years and understand the type of information that architects, interior designers, engineers, and contractors are looking for. You have been on a construction site and know the kinds of issues that construction professionals encounter.

Research Ability: We expect that you can do proper research on the topic you are writing about. You must have access to the internet and you should have access to the basic reference books for the industry.

Quality Writing and Editing Skills: You must be a native English speaker who can write about technical topics in a way that makes them easy to understand. You will follow our style and editorial guidelines. We expect to receive articles that require little to no editing. You will work collaboratively on suggested edits. You may even suggest graphics or images that should be included to help explain the topic.

Self Directed: Once we agree on a topic and general outline, you will be on your own to produce a properly cited rough draft. We are always here for questions, but you should be able to create the piece without much interaction. Our team will suggest edits, which you will be able to make in a timely fashion. You are flexible and can meet agreed upon deadlines.

Process

We hire through Upwork.com, a freelancing website that helps us manage the projects, payments, and 1099 forms.

We will communicate over email to establish a topic, agreed word count, and price for the article. Then you will prepare a complete draft for our review (we prefer to work with Google Docs for ease). Our team will read the draft and suggest edits that you will make. Once the final article is accepted, we will make a payment to you through Upwork. If things go well, we'll continue to work together.

We create all of the graphics, but it is helpful if you suggest examples. That way, you can reference images in the piece to make everything clear.

We post the article (usually within a week or two) and your name appears below the article as a contributor. You can also elect to remain anonymous.
