Calculating Volume

Here is a series of diagrams that demonstrate how to calculate the volume of three-dimensional shapes.

Volume of a Block, Prism, or Cylinder

The volume of a block, prism, or cylinder is easily calculated by multiplying the area of the base by the height/altitude of the object.

When the bases are not parallel, the height or altitude of the object is from the center point of one base to the center point of the other base.

Our article, Calculating Area, can help you determine how to calculate the area of a shape.

Volume = (area of base x height)

Volume of a Cone or Pyramid

The volume of cones and pyramids is calculated by multiplying the base by the height and then dividing by 3.

Our article, Calculating Area, can help you determine how to calculate the area of a shape.

Volume = (area of base x height) / 3
